Scientists are divided on whether or not global warming will lead to more and stronger hurricanes. While hurricanes draw their strength from warm ocean waters, there have been new findings on other factors that may work against stronger, more frequent storms. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has noted that decades-long periods of high and low hurricane activity had been recorded before, unconnected to any climate change. Also, measurement techniques have greatly improved in recent decades, making it difficult to compare data and detect trends.
Coral reefs from South-East Asia to the Pacific are in danger from pollution, coastal development, overfishing, and climate change. The region known as the "coral triangle", from South-East Asia to the Pacific, is considered to be the center of marine life on Earth, covers 1% of the planet with almost one-third of the world's coral reefs, and supports about 100 million people. Coral reefs are disappearing at about 1 to 2% per year, and could be gone by the end of the century.
